Mobile Adoptions
Every Saturday (and some week days!) PHS/SPCA takes animals and adoptions on the road. A group of volunteers and staff take adoptable dogs, cats, and small animals to locations throughout San Mateo County. All dogs are on leash while cats and small animals are secured in kennels. Adoptions can be done on the spot, and in most cases you are able to bring the animal home that day. Although we are showcasing our animals in hopes of finding permanent homes for them, we are also there to answer questions about PHS/SPCA services and other animal related questions. Please feel more than welcome to stop by and say hello!

Feral Cats
PHS/SPCA offers County residents a generous “feral cat” package with two goals in mind: to make using our services, including our Spay/Neuter Clinic, easy and to continue offering discounted services to people who need assistance with feral cats in San Mateo County. We encourage TTVAR (trap, test, vaccinate, alter, return) where caretakers are willing and able to provide ongoing care for ferals. We will offer trap rentals ($50 deposit and $1/day rental fee) through our Front Office.
People who have successfully trapped a feral cat and wish to have the cat altered can bring the cat to PHS/SPCA’s Spay/Neuter Clinic to be tested and altered. Our clinic is the County’s top spay/neuter resource for feral cat caregivers. We alter feral cats by appointment only, Tuesday through Friday. Once you have trapped a feral cat, please call this number and leave a message: 650/340-7022, ext. 679. Staff will check messages and call caregivers back to make appointments. Please note that trying to call around to different shelter departments in an attempt to reach a live person will not expedite the process; if anything, it will mean your information will not be left in the only place where it needs to be.
Our Clinic’s "Feral Cat Package” includes vaccines as age appropriate, ear tipping, FIV/FeLV tests, in addition to the surgery. This service is available for just $50 or it is free when a county voucher is presented. To obtain a voucher, call San Mateo County Health Department, Monday through Thursday, at 650/573-3940.

Pet Food Bank
PHS/SPCA regularly receives donated dog and cat food from local residents. We choose not to feed donated food to our shelter animals in order to maintain a consistent diet. Instead, we contact local human services agencies that operate food pantry programs, since they regularly encounter clients who have pets. The past few years, we’ve worked with Samaritan House, CALL Primrose and Ecumenical Hunger Program. We welcome the community’s pet food donations and look forward to growing this vital program. Local residents can bring donated food (cans or unopened bags) to our Coyote Point facility (12 Airport Blvd., San Mateo) or our new Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion (1450 Rollins Rd., Burlingame).

Our Pets in Rental Housing packet contains valuable information for renters with companion animals as well as for landlords who would like to list their housing that allows pets. Safe Pets Program
Animals living in violent households are often victims of abuse. People seeking refuge from such abusive situations are often unwilling to leave out of fear for their animal(s) safety. PHS/SPCA provides protection and temporary, free housing for animals for up to 45 days, during which time the client is asked to make more permanent arrangements. We ask clients to purchase a San Mateo County animal license (in client's name). This process can be completed at our shelter and establishes legal ownership of the animal in the event that the abuser visits the shelter looking for that animal. Vaccination and Microchip Clinics
We hold Vaccination Clinics on the first Wednesday of every month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in our auditorium. These low-cost clinics provide vaccinations for rabies, canine distemper, FVRCP and DHPP, as well as microchips -- a permanent form of companion animal identification.
